JD 455 Garden Tractor

Hello. I posted this same message up in the Tractor talk forum and it was suggested I post it here too. I would like opinions on the John Deere 455 garden tractor. Someone locally is selling one for $4500. Its a 1993 with under 1000 hours. It has a new 60inch mower deck. It is not all wheel drive. Looks to be in excellent shape. I just do not know much about these tractors and any insight is appreciated. Thank you

One response I got was that a weak point in these tractors is the rear end?

Those tractors were built like a tank . Engine should be good for another 1000 hr. or more . Price is good as well .
 
I do not have the diesel powered version of this model tractor, but I do have a 425 with all wheel steer. It is a great machine, built very well, and with minimal problems. I have had it for 8 years, as it was purchased used. It replaced a "tired out" 318. My wife runs it more than I do and she finds it very easy to operate. I had to replace something in the ignition system at the local Deere dealership, a bolt and bushing, and I am in need of replacing the guage wheels on the deck itself. Keep it serviced properly and it should take care of your needs for a long time. I have no desire to replace mine at this time, and it is 20 years old with a little over 1100 hours on the machine. As far as that diesel engine goes, I think that 3 cylinder Yanmar engine will run a long time. As far as what I have experienced and read, I believe that company makes some very good diesel engines.
 
Mine has around 1500 hours,I can mow three weeks on a tank, and my other 60in Deere will mow the same grass on two tanks of gas. Read the manual,the deck wheels are not to hold the deck,just keep it from scalping. Buy it quick.
