Looked at a 2240 today that is hooked up to an MX 6 rotary mower. Tractor looks decent tires are decent tac shows 500 hours which I'm sure isn't right. The PTO doesn't turn on when not gaged, but there doesn't seem to be a brake working as the momentum of the more continues to turn it without any brake from the PTO as near as I can tell. Also a small hydraulic leak at the PTO.

He's got a pretty decent price on the whole outfit but I'm wondering how concerned I should be about the power take off and the leak. It's a 1979 and I can probably buy it for six grand.

Which type pto(hyd ind with control lever between gear shift handles or continuous with dual stage clutch)? Continuous type has no pto brake. Pto oil leak should be a relatively simple repair. Did you check operation of hyd's after engine reached operating temp?

This has hydraulics between the two shifters. The tractor is in
town so I didn't really have a way to get it up to operating
temperature. Also looks like it might be a small water leak in
front.

The PTO brake on those is not very good,,but very pricey, and you need to split it to replace it,,I would not go through the time to replace it, just disengage the lever on the left side of the transmission when your not using it.

The way they are made,,I don't think they were much account from the start,,just another weak point on a bad design..
