4430 vs 4440

Can anyone tell me the advantages Deere improved the 4440 over the 4430? I usually see nice 4430's priced about 10k less than a 4440 in they're respective age & shape. As a kid I loved the appearance of the Sound Guard JD 30 series & I've always dreamnt of owning one someday. What were any known issues of the 30 series is basically my question. I think I would like to get one with the Quad range transmission someday...were these good transmissions? Thanks

4440 was a heavier tractor with a bigger engine.
4430 biggest weakness probably was final drives.

At the service school they gave us a deck of playing cards and they had a different improvements on each card 52,,and yes they were reaching for some of them of them, I still have that deck of cards some where...a 466 engine, heaver 3pt they speeded the transmission up and slowed it back down in the rear end, a 30 has high range direct drive, low range under drive, a 40 has high range over drive low range direct drive,,this helped the transmission a lot, hydro cushion seat, more insulation in the cab,, the cab mounted a bit stronger...to name a few and all were very worth while to make them much better than a 30...

As below, and I'll add a few: The 40 series was called "The Iron Horses"- more horses, more iron. Heavier final drives, etc. The 466 in the 4440 had better low end torque, and started somewhat better in cold weather. Bigger radiators, and I think more hydraulic capacity.

The 4430 is a good tractor, as is its predesesor, the 4320. The 4440 is a better tractor- it, the 4450, and the 4455 are considered by many the best Deere built.

everything on a 4440 is bigger heavier better and quieter than 4430.

or maybe 4430 was a good tractor...

4440 was a great tracor a late 4440 is even better

The 40 series had 92mm axels where the 30 had 86mm axels....40 series have 3 pinion differentials..30 series just 2 pinion...40 had bigger/wider final drive planetarys and in general the transmissions are beefed-up across the board.

Some of the heavier duty 40 series pieces can be retrofitted to the 30 series such as the bigger axels and 3 pinion differentials.

Some 40 series improvements may not be seen on very early 40 series...I have torn down 4440 tractors that had two pinion differentials...and early 40 series can be found with dual blower motors in the cab roof

Yes these things were listed on that deck of playing cards,, I will see if I can find them and post them ..

I believe the later 4430's (possibly late 1975 through 1977 model years) had some improvements not found on the early 4430's (1973, 1974, and possibly into 1975 model year). These improvements, I think, were mostly in the final drives. I remember some of our neighbors who had early 4430 and 4630 tractors who had some issues. We have had only a 4230 and a late 4630, and we didn't face those final drive issues. The cooling system on the 4630 was pretty lacking in warm operating conditions. I don't know if others had problems with lack of cooling in their 4430's though. In a nutshell, though, the 40 series remedied most, if not all, the shortcomings of the 30 series. The 30 series 404 engines were good engines, but the 466 in the 40 series was an even better engine. There were a lot of lesser details one could pick apart, and Tim S can probably recall more on this topic than I can. Of the two transmissions, I far prefer the Quad Range to the powershift in most field conditions in pulling a heavy load. The powershift just lacks in gears for heavier loads, in my opinion, but is decent for varying speeds in perhaps lighter duty.

Tim sorry to butt in here but the later 4440 after Serial #584136 had the crankshaft driven oil pump maybe you had senior moment

I couldn't remember the serial number break Kent,,but the crank driven oil pump was a great improvement on the latter 40 series..

The 4440 uses the entire hood, fuel tank, air filter of the 150 HP 4630. So it has more room to breathe. The 46 and 4840 got the new big radiator that set them apart and give also room to breathe.
The former 4430 engine installation went on to the 4240.

As far as used prices differences , it is true, but the 4430 is also a very good tractor. The difference of specifications and reliability is not like between an IH 560 and an IH 856.

The top end lower houred 4440s sell in the low 20s+ and the top lower houred 4430s still bring around $15K+ .Of course there are some exceptions but I think the improvements made in the 4440 are worth the extra. The same can be said of the 4450/55 series. Then the plastic and computers were introduced.I can advertise a nice 4020 or 4440 and it will sell and advertise a newer one and not get a call. Some say it is commodity related but I think the newer stuff is more problematic.
