JD 40 gear shift lock pin

Hello

I recently purchased a 1953 John Deere 40s. The gear shift is very sloppy. I removed the snap ring/bushing. The lock pin is worn pretty bad. I am looking for advise on how to remove the lock pin. Thank you

That pin is peened in. Can you drill it to remove the head? To get the new one in there I had somebody hold the ball side of a ball peen hammer on the inside of the pin and then I heated the outside red hot in order to get it tight enough without breaking the case iron shift tower.

I have one here in the shop right now with the same issue, remove the nut on the lock pin and screw it "In" towards the center, it is threaded into the transmission top. To fix this one I welded the slot shut (index the slot position first) and had it milled back to shape, mine is still at the machine shop, then cut a grade #8 bolt to match the length of the old lock bolt for a replacement.

Mine does not have a but on the lock pin. But I do like the idea of a grade 8 bolt. I think when I get my lock pin out I will tap it and do the same. Thanks for the advise guys.

Maybe that's what some one before me did...I don't have the shifter back yet.. heres a pic of what I have..
