Br governor shaft alignment

Hey guys , so this is what I am up to. The governor shaft on the br does not sit horizontal when I have the flywheel timing mark aligned with the mark on the tractor . the slot in the governor shaft is tipped back a bit so when the magneto is rotated back it will not trip the impulse. To trip the mag I need to roll the flywheel ahead slightly ( with the mag rotated all the way counterclockwise ) . the tractor still starts (by hand) and runs but I would like the timing set correctly. So if I unbolt the left side governor cover will I be able to lift the shaft enough to unmesh the governor gear from the can gear to time them correctly so the magneto slot is horizontal with the flywheel timing mark lined up ? Thanks

Kdl,
No, you can't do it that way.

Leave the left side governor cover in place. Remove all the governor cap screws except the 2 on the right side which should be loosened with just 1 or 2 threads engaged. Raise the governor housing and then rotate the flywheel enough to line up the timing marks. Then set the governor housing in place and install/tighten the cap screws.

IF you ever remove the left hand cover make sure the mag/dist is removed before you reinstall the cover. If you don't, you'll break something when you tighten the cover screws.

Yes pulling the governor up sounds like the way to go , I am just worried about damaging the gasket under it causing an oil leak. I planed on removing the magneto before removing the left governor cover ( to see slot in end of shaft ) would I be able to pull the shaft out to the left then turn it a few teeth then push it back in and put the cover back on , then put the mag on ?

On the G'a and A's you can pull the governor assembly completely out without removing the housing itself. I'll bet the same can be done on a B. You have to disconnect the throttle linkages and rotate the throttle lever in the governor so that #27 is turned back. If you rotate the cank so the assembly is just right. You can then pull it out of the housing. If you can't turn #27 far enough you will have to loosen the set screw and take the throttle linkage off and then it will turn far enough.
