So I think I'm going to go look at what he calls a 1940 jd b. I asked him what tranny the tractor has and he said the 6 speed. I thought the 6 speeds didn't come out till 1941...is that true? Anyway...is there anything in particular I need to check and all that when I'm there. Anything to look out for? Thanks

Take a look at the photos below of "Uncle Earl" our 39B.

The brake drums are unique for the 38, 39 and 40 styled tractors.

Hope this helps.

Hope it's a 41 because 39 (first year styled) and 40 are a real pain to get some parts for. I have an early 39 and it's in pieces (again) looking for parts. I think you are a lucky person if your ser # is before 60,000 or above 96,000.
