4320 - Oil Leak Question

Looked at a 4320 the other day that I was intending on buying but didn't and was looking for some opinions first. Before starting the tractor I noticed a bit of oil on the oil pan near the transmission housing. Tractor started and drove great. Everything worked as it should. Looking it over after that I noticed engine oil dripping from what my guess was the flywheel/clutch cover between the engine block and transmission. Positive it was engine oil. I am guessing this to be a rear main seal leaking? I also noticed on first start up a bit more smoke than I anticipated. It cleared up after being driven but was quite noticeable on first start. The tractor has not been used much as it is coming out of a semi-retired state where it was used to pull a few hay wagons around a yard a few times a year.

A rear main seal is an easy fix,and well worth it if the rest of the tractor was clean and well cared for.

Rest of the tractor was good shape. Only other issues besides smoke on start up was not a single light worked. That I can handle fixing however I would have to pay to have the rear main done. What would a ballpark on price be to pay to get that done Tim?

If it was here I would split it,replace the seal, inspect the clutch, replace it if it needed it, go back together..$950 labor I would make the lights and nutruel safety switch work on the same money, plus parts of course.

I will second what TimS stated. I will add that if the tractor is priced reasonable it will sell pretty fast so you had better make hay while the sun shines. LOL

Around me good ones bring $10000-15000 depending on condition. I have seen basket cases still bring $8500+.

The JD 4320 is one of the smoothest running tractor JD ever built. It has HP but handles like a smaller tractor too. It is the one model I do not currently own but want. I have owned several in the past but need to sell them to make money to live on then. Now they sell higher than I can justify just to "want'. I can buy JD 4430 for about the same money and add a little an get a JD 4440. So they are too high most of the time right now for me.

They will also leak engine oil if the last guy in there didn't clean up the flywheel bolts and crankshaft threads and use sealant on the bolt threads.

I was originally told $15k on the price but when I showed up he was kicking around "Ya know they bring $16k in this shape". It ran smooth and drove nice. Both sets of remotes worked, had the 1000 pto with it and hydraulic cylinder hangers, two sets of rear weights and front stack weights. It wasn't original paint like I had thought and some of the shields you could tell were off a different tractor as the green wasn't quite the same. It was all there and working but not quite 100%. Hydraulic oil was real clean but filters hadn't been changed recently especially the diesel. It was on there when some repainting was done.

So it begs a few questions and repairs so I am thinking it should be more in the range of $12k if you take into account some money towards repairs like you guys stated and it isn't 100%. I think he is holding at $15k though so not sure it is for me.

Most diesels will smoke and run a little rougher at start up.The rear main seal is minor but adds to the cost due to being split.4320 sell well if nice and are not that plentifull.Oil leaks are cheaper to fix than oil usage or excessive blow-by where you can spend the purchase price twice.

He is way too high for the condition as your state it. It is more a $10k tractor with mismatched sheet metal and mixed paint. He is dreaming if he think they will bring $16K in that shape.

From what you have shared $12K would be pretty close. Not original and needing at lest $1500 in repairs need to be considered.A very nice one sold at Creston Livestock consignment sale with loader for $17500.Mecums will have some nice ones that will be beautiful on the outside with new tires but have to check main parts.I bought a nice one at consignment auction .I wasn't there but had a knowledgeable JD guy I knew who called me about it.It looked good and ran nice but after I got it home lost all hydraulics due to brake problems.I assume they changed filter and oil and sold it.Paint and tires are cheap compared to the heart of a good tractor.Make Up and pretty clothes dont always make the best partners.
