jd 5045D start up problem

I bought a used JD 5045D several yrs back.When turning the key to start it it always goes"click" on the first turn and then nothing. On the second turn it starts right up(depending on the temperature in the barn where it is kept).i have cleaned all terminals and contacts for the ground wire on the chassis. is this normal or a developing starter problem?

If the click is at the starter it's probably
the solenoid.

Try cleaning/tightening all four(4) battery cable ends especially the one that bolts to tractor frame.

The ONLY way to trouble shoot electrical problems is with a volt meter. Spending a lot of time and money on expensive parts is silly. Advice that once upon a time "my tractor did this or that" is equally silly.
