Why does my 430 die when switching to "D"

On the 430S When I switch the ignition switch to "D", which is the farthest right positiin on the switch, the tractor dies as if it were intentionally turned off.

I replaced the ignition switch and that didnt help. What is the "D" position for anyway?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Not your ignition switch but your light switch and D probably stands for dimmer position. Supposed to be a dimmer resistor mounted to the backside of the light switch. The ignition switch proper has a key. Just a guess of course, but I would assume somethings wired a bit non-standard in it's current configuration. Getting the coil feed over onto the key switch might help some.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]SWITCHES AND LIGHTER[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the switch (Key 8) AM 1866 T.

Since this is the same switch installed on the Model 40S, then some of the information and photos provided below will be of the Model 40S.

Take a look at the description below of the [b:654c4848f0]IGNITION-LIGHT SWITCH[/b:654c4848f0] topic.

Note the last sentence in the third paragraph states ?[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]The ?D? position is for ignition, dim front lights and red rear light.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]?

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]Lamps and Ignition Wiring[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the RED wire from the TAIL LIGHT terminal on the ignition switch to the rear light.

Also Note the BLACK or GREEN wire from the FLOOD LIGHTS terminal on the ignition switch to the rear light.

Take a look at the photo below of the ignition switch terminals.

You might consider checking the terminals on the ignition switch, wiring to the head lights and tail light, and connections on the head lights and tail light.

You might also consider using a test light to ensure current from each ignition switch terminal to the head lights and tail light.

Hope this helps.

My 430W had a light/ignition switch issue. That switch does both functions, and in my case, when I got behind the dash, the mice had chewed the insulation off of some wiring. I installed a new switch,
repaired the bare spots on the wiring and all was well. The D is for the dim side of the lighting system. You may have a short in one of the lights too.

Thanks to everyone who responded and for these great pictures. Some wonderful people on here. I really appreciate it.

Ill recheck the wiring on the switch.

On my MT the lights quit working. I determined it was the switch. The motor would shut off in some positions also. I pried the tabs out on the back of the switch and took it apart, figured I didn't have much to lose. Found contacts inside were dirty so I cleaned them up and put switch back together and it worked fine.

Thanks for the compliment.

Years ago, developed and taught several "online - distance learning - eLearning" computer courses.

It is much easier answering "open book" test questions using the operator's, service, and parts manual manual at home.

Just employ the same methods as back then; only on a different subject.

Thanks again.
