4020 electrical help?

I have a 1967 4020 gasser. This is set up as a 12 volt system with 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. One battery died a couple months ago, so I bought 2 new ones. I put them in yesterday and now I can't get the thing to turn over?? I polished up the cable ends, and all I get is a click. Would someone please give me some trouble shooting ideas? Can I put a volt meter on there and check the cables somehow? I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks! (best idea would be to trade it for a diesel!!)

I do not know that tractor as such but her at a couple simple trouble shooting things that pretty much work on any engine. Find the solenoid. It is likely to be what is doing the clicking. It should have 2 big posts and one or 2 small posts. Jumper across the 2 big posts being 1000% sure it is out of gear. If it spins over then you are likely to have a bad solenoid. If it does not then you have a poor connection or a bad starter or the starter has locked up with the ring gear

I did put the tractor in 8th gear and rock it a bit.....the fan turned, so I think that should have released the starter if it was stuck? I will try jumping the solenoid and also check the voltage drop when it is engaged. Thanks

The tractor came from the factory with one 12 volt battery under the left side of the operator's platform, a generator and positive ground. The second battery may have been added to compensate for a charging problem or a slow electrical discharge, but the second battery does not fix the original problem. I would start by checking the condition of the new batteries, charge them, then check the charging system and then look for an electrical discharge.

I sounds like you did a great job checking connections on the hot side. My two cents would be to check the ground connections carefully. Paul

Thanks Mr. Tx for clarifying my comment. I was not clear.

I will add, if someone used one of those repair terminals with
the two quarter inch bolts that could also be the issue.
Corrosion gets in the wires and does not connect. Those
terminals should only be used in a pinch and then replaced
quickly afterward.
