High Hour 4020 Value?

Neighbor is looking at selling me his 4020 and neither of us are really sure what price to put on it. From what I can tell by the serial number it's a 1965 with almost 12,000 hours on it. I haven't been able to find any auction results from a 4020 with hours that high. This one has definitely seen better days, pretty faded paint, missing some lights and not all the gauges work also no 3pt hitch. But it runs well, power shift seams smooth, and he also converted the tractor from 24 volt to 12 volt. Ill leave the SN at the bottom in case I messed up the year or something. Also wondering if there is anything specific I should look out for when buying one of these old girls.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to YT
I think prices lately have weakened some on JD 4020's. I've seen some 4020 priced in the $5000-$7000 range. Location has a lot to do with value. I saw a late model very high high '69 model 4020 Syncrorange sell for $5000. I also see 4020's priced higher BUT pricing & selling are 2 totally different things.

There are few 4020s left with the original tach/hour meter, and if they have it, they easily could have been rolled over once (or more!) so don't believe what you see in auction data. The newest are 45 years old, so the vast majority saw a lot of use. The more important part is what kind of shape is it in???

I'd use condition to set value more than "hours".

With SN T223P, yours is a standard.
Does it have the solid cast iron non adjustable axle? What kind of rear fenders?
A one with older elephant style fenders, no 3 points, would not be more than 4-5000.

It is a '65. I guess it depends on what you intend to use it for.
No 3 point limits use. I would bet the pto doesn't stop.
Figure up what it needs (gauges, etc) and subtract that from $4500.
You can't buy one too cheap. Tire condition would make a difference.
As others said not many have original tachs so disregard what you
see advertised.

The salvage value on a running 4020 standard would be around $3000.So many variables ,tires, weighs, condition.I just sold a very nice 68 4020 hours were lower but again the hour meter isn't always correct but wear points were excellent and it brought $9000.If it has extra blowby or leakage out weep holes you could spend easily $6000.More than likely it has been overhauled but from what you told us it is average or below and there aren't many buyers for those kind of tractors.12K hours isn't that high as many 4020 have 20+ in 53 years which is only 200+ hours per year.Being its your neighbor helps. What you two decide on is its value. I looked at a rough running 4020 that had been O.Hd lots of small problems was a row crop with good W.F. and the best salvage bid I got was $3750

I bought one like you are describing with dual hyd. outlets, six pair of wheel weights and an M&W turbo for $4500 this spring. Sold turbo for $1000 and weights for $120 each. Tom

Awesome thanks for all the info guys, That definitely helps getting the first number thrown out. I actually used the tractor to blow snow this winter for him and PTO works perfectly, although I have heard that is a problem with a lot of models. If I have a minute Ill try and snap a few pictures as I'm not sure about the fenders or adjustable axle.

I'm going to look at the tractor again tomorrow. Are there any specific wear points I should be looking at? Will take a few pictures too.

Drawbar where implement attaches should be worn &/or 3 pt balls loose in sockets. Clutch pedal should have significant wear from contact with shoe/boot sole.
