a JD M is going to be sold at a local auction in a couple weeks. I have wanted a M for years and now may be my chance.

is there any standout problems with these machines ?

thanks.

Just all depends on how it's been driven & cared for. Other than all the things
that some will say about getting off & on & setting the brakes, as we age these
items become a issue. But over all a good little tractor, I've owed one for a few
years & I use it a lot on the farm.

Just look for leaks, how the clutch feels & noise's in the transmission. Test the brakes
make sure they work, all these things either add of take away for the selling price. See
if there is equipment that can be purchased to go with it, all of these things add up.

I have frt & rear weight for mine, a 51 mounted cycle mower, cultivator, belt pulley, snow plow
ground plow, tool bar weeder + a 3 point hitch kit. & I will add I purchased it for a SONG..

We have owned "Sparky" our 51M for over 8 years.

The tractor was used to power a Bush Hog ATH 600 finishing mower.

The M is an 18hp tractor.

If you use it as designed and do not overload it, then it will work just fine.

Had to replace the clutch last year.

That has been the only major mechanical work done on this tractor.

Spruced it up a little bit this time last year.

It only pulls the tilt trailer these days.

It has been a good little tractor for us.

I've got an M that my dad bought about 30 years ago and it has been an extremely reliable workhorse over the years. Other than replacing a pin in the rockshaft control lever once and a few new batteries over the years it has required absolutely nothing in the way of repairs. It gets quite a bit of use, too. If you're planning on actually using the tractor the live hydraulics are a nice feature and a 3-point conversion is easy to do. With the low pressure hydraulics and light front end, however, don't expect it to lift real heavy implements.

The only common problem on an M is sloppy steering due to the steering box running out of oil and wearing the parts inside. All wf dubuques have the same issue although the later models were improved with dual guide pins. Hope it sells reasonable so you can bring it home,

With those heavy front weights there has to be a set of rears around. I would ask. Appears to be a fairly late 48 in very good shape wearing it's work clothes.
