JD 4240 engine rebuild question

I’m rebuild the engine on my 4240 and have a few questions. I am getting ready to put the head on and the JD service manual says install head gasket dry. Normally I would use a can of the copper spray gasket, should I or should I not? When setting the clearance between the rocker arms and valves what should I try to maintain when cold (yes, I will have to readjust them one it is hot). What about priming the oil pump?

Always use new head bolts and rod bolts. There is a newer torque pattern to the head as well.

I wouldn't use copper coat on the head gasket although I've seen it done...I don't use it myself...I also don't re-torque the bolts after a run-in. With the new type gasket and new bolts it isn't needed.

I adjust the valves to .018" intake and .028" exhaust...and do not re-adjust

I agree 100%. New torque to yeild head bolts and you are done. No more messing around and trying to redo when hot. My 4230 was my first one about five years ago. Tom
