38 John Deere B

I am still working on the throttle adjustment for my 38 John Deere B. When I get the tractor started the governor takes over? Meaning I can pull on the governor level and the RPM's pick up, but the weights or something wants to slow the RPM's down. When the tractor is stopped, the butterfly that the throttle level is attached to moves from being at the lower idle spring to about half throttle position? What have I got wrong? Thanks

With the tractor off shove the throttle lever wide open. Then set your carb wide open. Your linkage should just be a half hole short from going in the hole of the carb. Ron Mn

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]THROTTLE CONTROL[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the throttle rod (Key 4), 1/4 nut (Key 5), throttle rod end (Key 6), and governor arm (Key 23).

Move speed control lever to the wide open position. Set throttle disk in wide open position. Lengthen or shorten rod end until the rod is 1/2 hole short. Take a look at the photo below of "Uncle Earl" our 39B.

Note the distance between the governor arm and speed change spring is approximately 1/8 inch.

Hope this helps.

Take a look at the photos below of the governor lever arm positions on our 39B.

IF the speed control lever is completely closed, then the governor lever arm is against the speed change spring with no clearance.

If the speed control lever is positioned within 1/2 to 1 inch of completely closed, then the governor lever arm has approximately 1/8 inch clearance from the speed change spring.

This is the position that shuts down our tractor.

The governor lever arm is as far forward towards the front of the tractor as it will move.

Hope this helps.
