Have 1020 John Deere gas, that block and head have been
thru machine shop. Have put motor back together and head gasket leaks, Changed to a John Deere head gasket, leak
slowed. Put pressure test on cooling system and getting
some water drops in oil pan. What could be problem?
I'm needing advice

I assume the sleeves were changed out, was the sleeve protusion checked? Possible O Ring damage on installation?

If you're getting drops in the oil pan, remove the pan and see if you can see where it is coming from. May be able to see something under the valve cover also but not likely on that engine even if it is the head gasket.

As mentioned, sleeve protrusion,or not enough of it is very important.John Deere had shims to correct that.If the block was decked without cutting the counterbore that could be a problem too.Although, even the poorest machine shop I've seen knows enough to do that.As for drops in the pan, pressurize the system and look at the bases of the sleeves with a good light.Very easy to cut a rubber installing new sleeves. Also,if I remember right those engines need the blocks ground before installing new sleeves. The factory edge where the lower part of the sleeve slides into the block had a sharp machined edge to it.You just need to grind a little chamfer on it so the o-rings don't get cut installing the sleeves.Other engines put the o-rings in the block, but I believe on that engine JD put the o-rings on the sleeve instead.

Was the engine assembled with clearances and torque as per the service manual ? Or was a pile of parts assembled and bolted together ?
