Lead washers for head studs on 50?

I am having no success removing two exhaust bolt stubs from the head on my 50 (manifold replacement is always such a joy on a 63 year old machine). They're REALLY stuck in there as I detailed in the other thread. At this point it's only a little more work to pull the head and have the guides/seats done while it's off!

The service manual shows ten lead washers under the nuts (p/n B369R). They can still be had for around a buck each. Is there a more modern replacement (copper or aluminum, perhaps)? Or should I go with the exact replacements?

thanks
Charles

I would get the lead ones. I got copper ones with the last 720D head set I did years ago and they were a disaster !

Some say they are not needed ? I don't know for sure but I put them back in as called for from the factory.

The lead washers, if I recall correctly from when I last did the head on my 60, serve as a low friction surface below the nut that aids in getting proper torque applied. Other metals would not give the same result.

Thanks... but I decided not to pull the head since I got the two bolt stubs out! Although it took me hours, I felt very satisfied
when the last PITA started to turn :)

Anyway for $1 each I think I'd just buy them ;)

I hear ya, sometimes it's the little victories. I spent a pile of time this summer trying to get a new to me B to start with the starter and never got it to before the show at Rollag. Piddled with with Saturday morning of the stow and lo and behold, it started! After it had run for a minute or so, I noticed that I had drawn a bit of a crowd. Apparently they found my happy dance, complete with hoots and fist pumps, to be somewhat entertaining.
