1stJDRestore

New User
Hey All, I have taken on my 1st Restore Project. it is a 1950 John Deere Model A! So far I need the whole governor assembly, camshaft, piston and connecting rod, the gear connecting from the governor to the camshaft. I live in Minnesota North of the Twin Cities about 20 miles. If you have any of these parts, or know of someone that has any of them let me know!

Thanks!!

As you add up the price of individual parts, you may find that they exceed the price of an entire donor tractor. Might be worth considering. Congratulations on your first project.

I think I have all you need. but you need to buy the whole tractor and I live in Arkansas if interested email me. If I do $600.for entire tractor whats left of it. can send pictures has entire motor on it. plus much more. thanks

WOW ! What caused all that damage ? I all my 40 years working on these and parting out ALOT of 2 cyl. I have yet to see one that bad torn up inside.

Gotvald implement in Hillman Mn ( about an hour N of you) 320-355-2500 or you could check with Larson equipment in Harris MN, about 10 minutes east of Cambridge.

Don't let them discourage you! :) With some help, and some good used parts you can have it back up and running! There was a little bit of a catastrophe, but determination is key. Could you part it out? Yea... But where is the challenge in that?

You can do it. There are lots of folks on here willing to help you if you get in a bind with something. There is a nice guy in Moundridge, KS (no connection) who salvages and SHIPS parts and is reasonable. 620 386-0071

With all those pieces flying around in there I wonder if the skirt of the block got knocked off ?

Yes, it did brake the block skirt on #2 cylinder. I was over there helping him tear it down some tonight. Looks like the either the cam gear failed, and jammed up everything, or #2 rod journal failed around the crank, pushed the rod into the cam, cracked it in half and then broke the gear. Whatever happened, it wasn't pretty. So far it looks like he will need the following:

Block
Cam setup
Cam follower/lifter block (rod must have hit it and broke the bolts clean off as it was just hanging in the crankcase)
Governor housing possibly with all internals (Cracked housing)
Pistons, rings and rods with bearings (will need to double check the size of the bearings, and measure the crankshaft)
Oil Pump housing (broken ear on top)

Have not checked the crankshaft for wear and out of round yet, but hopefully will get it done this weekend. I am sure he will post some pictures of everything we have pulled out. Must have been a loud BANG when it happened, but with a little elbow grease she will run again! I know that everyone on this forum will help out as much as they can. Trying to get this young fella into this hobby and show him the ropes!

Ken, I really appreciate all the help with this Project. The best part about this one, is that I am learning so that if I ever need to fix something in the future, I will know how to do it on my own or with a little help. The best way to learn is from the ground up, and basically that is what we are doing!! Again, thanks for the help!

I do also appreciate all the possible salvage yards tips, and words of encouragement.

Thank you all!

Block can be sleeved if the rest of it is any good. Those blocks like to crack on the bottom outside and up inside the cyl. walls around where the head studs end. Look the main case over it may of cracked it ? Someone may of tried pull starting it with a cyl. full of gas ? This can bend the rods and then the rest can follow ? Maybe a gov. or cam bearing came apart and got stuck in stuff ? Another tractor of the same year would be the best parts source and fix the best of the 2. I had one where the balls from the gov. thrust bearing fell into the cam and oil pump drive and busted up those parts. If nothing else you learn a lot just from tearing one down.

Just a quick update, the tractor is torn apart completely, parts needed include: block, rocker arm assembly, oil filter assembly, push rods, pistons, connecting rods, main bearings, governor housing.

Individually, those parts will add up to a bit of money so you may want to consider a donor tractor. That can take a bit of looking but it can be part of the fun. Of course that also depends on the space you have to store it, transporting it and all that. Otherwise try broadening your information base by getting on the Internet and finding other groups and sites besides this one. My son has found some good parts deals on the Two Cylinder Club page on Facebook for example.
