I will replacing my points on my 620 with a electronic ignition from Petroniks, and also the coil with a flame thrower coil from Petroniks. My question is, will I be able to see a spark on the grounded plug when try to time it like I would with points?

That depends upon whether you get the unit installed properly and working properly!

At that point it will produce a timed spark as a magnet in the magnet wheel passes the unit as the engine is turned, just like a set of points when they break "open".

GOOD LUCK!

I agree you ought to be able to see a spark across the gap of a grounded plug, that's kind of the purpose of replacing a mechanical point closing switch with a solid state device..........Be sure polarity is correct, your JD was originally POS ground.

Indeed, the later distributor ignition models had a small peep hole where flywheel timing marks could be observed as I recall. That was AFTER the old open flywheel mag equipped tractors.

Use the timing hole and as I recall at fully retared the distributor was at 0 then throttle up advances to 20 degrees...you need to use a timing light through the timing hole top of cover...there should be a paint mark at TDC which is 0 degrees...
