Removing dowel pins from 70D front support?

At some time in the last 60 years, my 70D must have had a standard front end, because there is one huge dowel pin sticking out of the front support (should be one on each side of the pedestal). It gets very close (actually touches) the right tire when the left one goes all the way down.

It's about 3/4" inch in diameter, and has been there a very long time. What's the best way to get it out without cracking the front support? I figure taking the nose off and using penetrating oil and a hefty punch/hammer might drive it out the bottom. It just laughs at my attempts to remove it from below.

One way is to drill and tap it,,then use a slide hammer to jar it out..they are not that hard to drill...

Combine a vice grip with a slide hammer- some have identical threads (where the vice grip adjusting bolt is). Heat the pin, apply candle was as it cools...try hammering it out. BTW, Dr, are you a chiropractor?

Thanks for the tip! My cheapo (Harbor Freight) slide hammer probably has metric threads, but I can get an old pair of vise-grips from a flea market and weld a matching nut...

It's not that hard to take the nose sheetmetal off and drive them from above though. Assuming they aren't blind holes!

No, I'm a physician (board-certified in occupational medicine). I just have many different hobbies :)
