JD 620 freezes up in winter

I have a 620 that I have no been able to use in winter for over 10 years. When ever it gets below freezing, the motor locks up and the starter can not turn it over. I have opened all the drain plugs to the crankcase and gear box oil to see if there is any water, and nothing. I took the fly wheel cover off to see if there was water pooled there and nothing. In the summer I run it a lot with a bush hog so you would think if any water is in the motor it would evaporate, but every winter for the last 10 years when I try to start it below freezing, the motor is locked right up and will not turn. Can someone give me an idea where I might look for pooled water that could be causing this?

Are you sure the engine is locking up ? or perhaps power steering, hydraulics ? live pto ? have you tried disengaging the hyd. and pto ? or something goofy with the starter ?

Anti freeze not strong enough & the water pump is stuck? Water in the oil would break the oil pump drive coupling.

I haven't tried disengaging the hydraulic pump or the pto. I will check to see if there is water in those. I know it is water because at 29F it will not turn over and feels locked, but at 33F o 34F, it will turn over and start. I know I have anti freeze because I can see the color is real green, so I don't think it is the water pump freezing.

There's water in the side cover. Mine does it too if I don't get it drained before cold weather sets in. Put the Knipco under it for a 1/2 hour and it is good to go again.

I agree with MSD. The reduction gear cover has water in it. Could also be in transmission, causing the gears for the PTO to freeze. If that is the case, it would start if you disengage the PTO via the little lever side of the gearshift.
