Will a JD 60 cultivate 30" rows effectively?

Looking at purchasing a 4 row mounted cultivator for my John Deere 60 tractor. I am also putting 15.5 rear tires on the tractor. Will 15.5 rubber fit comfortably in 30" rows and will the rollamatic front fit comfortably? Also, how difficult would it be to put a single front wheel assembly in place of the rollamatic should the width of the current front end be incompatible with 30" rows? Thanks,

Pete

Should work great, that's what those tractors were designed to do. Just set the
wheel spacing for 30 inch rows, no need to change the front end. Ben

If your 60 has the split pedistal, a single front wheel is an easy conversion. Some of the early 60s did not have the split pedestal, though.

We cultivated 30" crops for years with 720's, then 3020's and 4020's, all with narrow front roll o matics and 15.5-38's.
Now we use a 8130 and 8230 and a (cough, cough) IH 9250 4wd articulated to cultivate 30" rows. All rears are 18.4 or metric equivalent. And steerable 3pt quick hitches w/ auto steer guidance for the tractor steering. Works great if you remember to turn everything on...

The B, if a late one in good shape would probably handle things unless you were trying to move pretty quickly to throw some dirt around the plants. In that case you might wish you had something bigger. One
other thought- doing 4 30 in rows vs the 4 38's that were common when these tractors were new- you could probably drop one shovel per row, reducing power needs and still get full coverage. This would help if
using a B.

If a 60 has power steering, that would be preferrable to a B, though.

Do you have a cultivator available?

Dad's is right in the shed where he parked it. Set on 36". He passed away Dec. 1992.

It was last used on a 2510. Prior to that on a 50. The narrow front tires on the 50 worked better than the 7.5Lx15 on the 2510.

I have a 2 row for the B and there a 4 row available but about 120 miles away. I am not sure if I can get it on my 8 foot pickup

My Dad's uncle ran a 4 row cultivator on a B for years. Not sure of the row width, but this was the 1960's, so I'm guessing they were 38" or 40".

I cultivated a lot of 30" corn with a 620 and it worked fine. My cultivator had trip shanks on it. I only needed 3 shanks to do 30" rows, the more shanks the more it plugs in big weeds. I ran 4" half sweeps next to the rows and an 8" full sweep up the middle. The rigs next to the tractor on some of the later cultivators are curved so the beam is under the tractor frame, this helps on narrow corn. I did some 28" rows for a farmer a couple times. The rigs from a newer cultivator will go right on the older units.

15.5 tires are fine- you can run an 18.4 down 30 inch rows.......did it for years with a 4020 and 4240.

(quoted from post at 14:19:21 09/15/17) It appears that you haven't listed your location. I assume you're a lot farther than 120 miles from central NY.
probably so, I am in Kutztown pa

My neighbor used to have a four row 38" front mount cultivator on a late B on flat heavy ground. He didn't set any speed records when it came lay by time.
