I have a 1951 B and it froze a couple years ago and is cracked pretty bad at the bottom of the block. I need to get under there and look at it a little closer, but does anyone know if that bottom part of the block splits off? I think it does. Also, how tough of a job will it be getting that off? I am near a machine shop that may be able to weld it - or I will be searching for a different block. I would appreciate any suggestions - I have never been into anything like this before. Thanks!!

Best search for another good block.

The bottom part of the block does not split off it is all cast in one piece. You can remove the head first and then the block can be removed while most of the tractor is left intact. No need to remove hood, grilles or fanshaft.

Actually, it might be the head?? I'm not much of a mechanic - and I haven't gotten under there to have a good look either. I need to get a service manual and see if I am up for tearing it apart.....it would be a good adventure for me!!

Good point. If it froze the heads do seem to go first. If bad enough I have seen them freeze and break the head, block, upper water pipe and bottom radiator tank !

More then likely the head cracked. Could be the block too. BUT If you do remove the block theres a cover on top of crankcase that alloys you to see the connecting rods and crank. If you look closely between the two cylinders on the backside of block theres a steel oil line that needs to be removed before removing the block. 5/8" short end wrench will remove the line nuts. Have fun with that too !! I just removed and installed a 46 B block and that line is a PITA to get to....

No line to unhook on the B's from serial # 201,000 and up. These are the pressed frame models with battery under the seat.
