2040 IP losses preasure while setting

2040 runs great after you get it started. After 3 hrs setting it has to turn over 5-10 times to crank, after overnight it takes a lot of starting fluid to get going.
New lift pump and filter, good flow from tank.
I am leaning towards a bad check valve going into IP.

Welcome to YT
Seeing that you stated you replaced lift pump & fuel appears to be leaking back to tank I will guess fuel line from tank to lift pump has a pin hole in it.

I will second TxJim: Also QUIT THE darn starting fluid!!!!! A JD 2040 three cylinder engine can vary easily be damaged by using either. Bent connecting rod to broken rings. Even sometimes cracked pistons. So FIX the bleed back problem before it causes a larger engine problem.

Ditto what JDSeller stated on engine can be easily damaged utilizing starter fluid especially if sprayed directly into air intake instead of utilizing ether starting aid on dash

Sorry but I don't remember. I do remember witnessing the fuel bleeding back without a drop falling on the ground or shop floor.

I used brown paper on the floor and talcum powder on fuel lines and found no leak. So I think we will have to look at the metering valve next. It's a manual shutoff.
This is my first JD so I'm learning, ya'lls advice is helpful. Thanks

IIRC fuel can leak back to tank from hole in fuel line & not a drop will leak on floor.
