Fuel runs through fuel pump when carb line unhooked

Should gas run through fuel pump when the tractor is shut off as when I unhooked the line from the fuel pump to the carburetor gas continued to run from the carb inlet line

I think so as the internal check valves are in such a way to prevent drain back the other way. Your tank must be pretty full and maybe even some pressure built up to run that much ?
