John Deere 40 shift lever

The shift lever on my John Deere 40 is a little sloppy. Takes a little patience to get it in the gear of choice. I'm wondering how to tighten this up and not have a sloppy shift lever. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

There is an alignment pin in the shift tower that can be replaced and the shift lever has a corresponding slot that wears and can be rebuilt with weld and re-cut. The pin is riveted in so it takes some patients to install, I heated mine up to make it easier.

I like the shifter on my 40W

There was a service bulletin from Deere many moons ago to replace the complete top cover and shifter with the style used on the model 420-430 with the gated tower. So Much better ! I'd find one from a later tractor on ebay or junk yard and swap it out.

That is what was done by the previous owner of my 40T.
