I just purchased a used 1981 John Deere 2240. I new it had issues and I am working on trying to fix them. The one I need the most help with is the rockshaft lever was severed off at the rockshaft housing. It looks a bit rusted in but I am not sure since I cannot get a hold of it. I looked inside through the side bolt and things look okay in there but is there an easier way to remove this rockshaft lever rod or will I have to remove the whole rockshaft housing. Please help.

Welcome to YT
Sorry but you will need to remove rockshaft housing to R&R the broken control shaft. R&R of RS housing isn't a bad job. Most difficult part is getting cam follower in correct location in linkage.

How do you make sure you get the cam follower in correct location in linkage. Have you remove the housing before and what is the best procedure for removing it.

Back when I served as a JD dealer service manager I supervised R&R of several JD utility tractor RS housings of that era. Cam follower must fit against rear side of roller in linkage(key 4)

How do you lower the rockshaft cover so that the cam follower perfectly seats in the proper place on the lever? I have tried several dry runs without the Permatex Gasket sealer applied (JD no longer makes the gasket for my 1974 model 830. It is very difficult to get the cam follower seated directly behind the lever. I'm using a flashlight and small extension mirror looking through the hydraulic fluid filler hole but I can see that it will be very difficult to do without messing up the Permatex bead. Since I am using Permatex Anaerobic Gasket sealer I need to be able to lower the housing carefully and precisely without messing up the Permatex bead.

Very carefully. RS gasket shows to be still available from my JD dealer. Be sure to install quad ring at RH frt of trans case.

So I have not started on this yet. I am still a bit intimidated about when I get the housing off and getting it put back together. I called and talked to a tractor mechanic and he made it sound way worse to get it all fixed, not sure if that was a mechanic wanting the work or not. However, I have got a new rockhouse gasket and o rings coming. I also ordered the technical manual and it did not give me as much information as I was hoping. Is this a hard task or will I be able to do it and get it back together right. Please give me your thoughts and feedback.

I am by no means a mechanic and I have repaired things in the past but sometimes it takes me longer to figure out the problem when I have tackled something. I would like to do this on my own just so I understand how it works and how it goes together, but that being said I would say my mechanic skills are novice at best.

The most difficult part is lining cam follower in correct spot behind roller in linkage that attaches to RS control handle. Roller fits on cam(key 9) where line to 9 is located in photo. Red arrow indicates location of cam to roller
