Correct magneto 1938 A JD

what is the correct magneto for a 1938 A JD? it has a Wico C on it now. How come so many of these old A's have the Wico magneto on them?

From the factory the 1938 A had Edison Splitdorf CD mags.
Wico C was used from 1940 to mid 1948 and Wico X from mid 1948 to end of production in 1952.

Mostly because the Edison Splitdorf CD mags didn't work very well and are hard to get parts for. They were swapped out to a Wico C-mag which are much more reliable and parts are easy to obtain.

I had a Wico C on my JD model L/Hercules. Thanks to John Brillman at the john Brillman Co in Virginia I went to a Wico X and never looked back. You probably could get a Wico X from him for your A.
