2130 fuel gauge

Been pulling my hair out over this! Have to ask for help before I'm bald. The fuel gauge on my 2130 wasn't working correctly so I bought a new sender unit. Still didn't work. Bought a new gauge. New gauge won't register. Took gauge out and put 12V+ direct from battery to + on gauge and - from battery to G on gauge (like wiring diagram shows)...nothing. Put - to ground terminal on gauge and needle flies over to full. Isn't the ground terminal there just to make the light work? Checked sender....at empty 9 ohms...at full position 189 ohms. Checked old sender and the resistance is the same. HELP!

No, ground on the gauge case is not just for the light bulb. Must be a good ground and instrument panel itself must have a good ground too. Rust underneath panel causes a lot of non working gauges, lights, and idiot lights. Each one when on can affect how much fuel your gauge shows too, so a good ground every where is imperative.

Check your instrument panel for voltage with black lead of voltmeter on grounded battery terminal, if you have voltage on panel metal that may be the root of the problem. Gauge feet are the method of gauge grounding so that panel metal on the underside has to shine like new. Protect the shine with silicone grease otherwise known as dielectric grease and/or spark plug boot lubricant. I will take the time and trouble to build a separate grounding wire for the panel itself, again shine the metal and protect it.

Even with this done on the 3020 I'm dealing with, hydraulic light and fuel gauge comes and goes as it wants too, but that might be a bad 24 volt/split system starter that is due for immediate replacement. They certainly can drive you crazy, best of luck.

Yes I do have an inline fuse of 15 amp IIRC, and I recently found it blown and am checking it often. In the middle of this 8 year old battery replacement we found the fuel tank fatigue cracked along the dome pressed into the bottom of it for steering gear clearance and have attempted to tin it and lay down a layer of solder as a patch to fix the empty fuel tank issue as well stop leaks from the same area which has made this one of the fuzziest dirt balls I've had the pleasure to work on. SNT113P075517R serial if that helps. Has delco 1113190 starter.

So we try to start it and only have the engine oil light working and then like magic something changes (inside the solenoid/starter?) and we have working fuel gauge with hydraulic light working too. Back and forth it goes until we realize this starter is dragging and won't work right. No obvious battery drain and it was charging good for the past 8 years, when or how the fuse blew of course can't be known now.
