John Deere H smoking

Just picked up a little H and is hand start.smokes a lot at low rpm and clears up at high rpm. Also noticed small spots of oil on the hood coming from the exhaust stack. any thoughts on what this might be.Have not checked compression but it seems to run pretty good. Thanks for any help.

Hey Wigg,
How long has it been sitting? Rings could be stuck. It could also just be worn out and need attention. It may have just been putting around and needs to be run hard to clean out. My guess is it's tired and will need work but who knows you may get lucky. Good Luck!

First thing I would do is change the oil. Its not uncommon for fuel to have leaked past the 3 way valve and diluted the oil. I have had this happen on my tractors more than once when I forgot to shut off the sediment bowl. It causes the symptoms you stated. At least then you have marked one off if it doesn't stop smoking.

The "oil" spots could just be soot mingled in with condensation.
