jd 317 dies shortly after engaging pto

jd317

New User
Hello,
I'm new to this site and am looking to fix my jd 317. It runs great but it dies when I engage the pto. sometimes it will run for 30 mins then die, others 10 seconds.
the ignition switch is warm to the touch. I have replaced the pto switch already and checked the connection on the seat safety switch.
Anybody have some ideas where to look next.

thanks

It might be the coil if it has the original engine or something close to it. I would post this on the garden tractor board down below.

Likely the electric pto clutch is failing. The coils short out internally and then draw more current than the charging system can produce. Before long the system voltage drops below what it takes for the engine to run. Sometimes they will start again after the pto is shut off. You can test the pto coil with an ohm meter. I don't know offhand the reading for a good coil but it should be insulated from the frame.

Ignition switch shouldn't get 'warm", could be bad switch and/or connector.

Check out the wire to the PTO clutch for insulation damage.

There's a circuit breaker under the battery tray with push-on connectors that rust/corrode and make poor contact, causing an intermittent circuit, plus heating the breaker making it trip.

If possible, check the Amp draw of the clutch. IIRC, probably about 5 Amps, certainly not 10 or more.

If the clutch is drawing too much it will make the switch hot and draw hard enough to kill the engine. But make sure the clutch is bad before buying one they are not cheap...
