JD H jumping out of gear

We just found and acquired the '41 JDH our dad bought in 1947. Runs reasonably well considering age and condition. The biggest problem is that it jumps out of 1st gear when under a heavy load - bit disconcerting going up hill.

Any ideas on cause and/or remedy?

Thanks in advance of any help.

Make sure that the detent that holds the gear is not worn. On my old !010 Diesel, I had to replace the shift rails, springs and balls; both rails, etc. it's this locking system that make the whole thing work.

Also check for worn bearings letting shaft drop out of alignment and/or the teeth could be ground off from shifting on the go. Easy enough to pop the top off for a look in there. Those are pretty easy to work on too.
