I have a 48 deere that needs a flywheel , I'm looking for one and some advice on what problems to look for since I'm new to two cylinders .

Well . . .I think we need to know why it needs a new flywheel. Original won't tighten, splines boogered, cracked, was lost or stolen? You might slip up to the search block at the top and put in flywheel problems and sort out the JD ones for clues. Let us know!

it's a new tractor to me and I took of the cover to time it today and found it shake rattle and rolling . splines are broken on the flywheel the crank appears to be ok but I don't know the original size's so I can't be sure . any help will be appreciated .

All I've got is IT manual and it doesn't give specs on splines. You can go up to search block and look around there under different things. I didn't find anything, but you might find something I missed. Wouldn't be first time! But most cases like yours (well over 90%) the crankshaft splines are worn just enough that if you put on a different flywheel, clamp bolts and nuts and tighten them down--the flywheel will crack because it doesn't have the "spring" in the cast to tighten up on even a "looks OK" crankshaft. I had a tractor that someone had done that to. The splines looked "fine" on the shaft, but weren't. The solution to this is a "Taperlock" flywheel. I understand that a flywheel can be sent in and had a taperlock hub installed. Since mine was cracked, I had to have the whole kit and kaboodle. Warning--these are expensive. I got one for a modest $6-700.00, and had to pay mother Deere $500.00 for a ring gear. You can re-use your ring if it's good or can be "flipped". Sorry to have to tell you this. Maybe someone who knows more will speak up--hope so. Good luck.

Believe you'll need one from a 48/52 B Or a Model 50.. Should stop at Model 50. later 520's & 530 were larger spline. Even tho
the ring gears were the same.

I know it can happen to any two cylinder, but it seems like late B's are common to have loose and/or cracked flywheels. The one I'm working on had a cracked flywheel. I bought another flywheel but after cleaning that one up I found two cracks in it! Did a Google search and found three more with cracks.
