JD A Air Cleaner Color

Hi, I"m restoring a 1940 A John Deere and have found something unusual in the cleanup that I wanted to ask about. This tractor has been repainted back in the late 70"s. I"ve been stripping all the green paint off and have got most of the repaint off. It still has the original green paint under the repaint and it"s tough to strip off. I got to the air cleaner assembly and found that the lower part of it has black paint under the original JD paint job. The oil cup and the separator that goes between the cup and filter housing is also black inside and out.

My question is: Should the air cleaner assembly on this A be painted black on the outside or should it be painted green? Does anyone know why it"s painted black? The upper cast portion of the air cleaner shows no black paint on it. It was completely packed with mud daubers though. It took about 2 hours of picking with long rods to bust them all out. I don"t know how it even ran. It didn"t run any better afterward though. LOL

Green.

Take a look at the oil cup below on "Easy" our 46 A.

You might consider using on old work sock to cover the air stack to keep out the mud daubers.

Hope this helps.

" Does anyone know why it"s painted black? "

An outside company made the air cleaner and painted it black, generators, and other accessories the same way. They were installed, then the tractor was painted green. The cast iron upper part was made by DEERE, and NOT painted black.

That's what I was thinking. I just needed to hear it from someone else. OK, one more restoration question. Is the fan blade on this tractor supposed to be green or yellow? I have seen many of them with yellow fan blades. I even saw an official Deere video from 1940 in color that had the fan blades painted yellow. When I stripped the pain off of this one there was no sign of yellow paint. Thoughts?

I notice in Mr. Howell's pictures below that his fan blade is painted yellow. Perhaps he will chime in again.
With the shroud off, I'm not sure which model/year we're looking at.

Mr. Howell?
