Convert 40 to 12 volt

Hi guys,
Contemplating converting a 40 tractor I recently acquired to 12 volt. The starter will be fine and the regulator, light bulbs and ignition coil are fairly easy. The question is the generator. My generator guy says is not difficult to convert the generator to to 12 volt as long as he can find a set of 12 field winding's that will fit in that generator. Before I took it to him I was wondering if anyone knows if Deere used a 12 volt generator in something else that would bolt up to a 40, like maybe a 1010. I would prefer to stay with a generator for originality as opposed to converting to an alternator.
Thanks, John

I would second B&D's comment, especially if you're wanting to keep an original look. If your 40 isn't starting well with 6V something is wrong with it. I have an M (which is essentially the same tractor) with an all-original 6V system and it fires up great on the first or second revolution every time, regardless of the weather or how long it's been setting. I'd suggest that before you put too much into a conversion that you make sure that the tractor has good, heavy gauge battery and ground cables with clean, solid connections. The only reason I wish my M was 12V is so that I could use it to jump-start other machines since it's one of the most reliable starting tractors I have!

I agree with sticking with 6V. I have a 40C that was converted to 12V before I bought it and a 420U that is original 6V. Both start down to 0ºF. I ha ve head of people snapping the nose off the starter with 12V. Good cables and a decent battery and the engine as it should be and they will start. If they don't there is something wrong and 12V is a band aid, not a fix.

The fields can be had. Classic Generator as well as others does them all the time. While a standard 12v genny might bolt right up it is much longer than the one you have so you may lose the origonality look anyhow.
