differential quill gasket revisited

I pulled on the quill with my hands while I hit the ears with a dead blow hammer to get it to rotate and it came right off. Got a little tight in the last inch or so. Took out .100" gasket/shims. Re-seated the quill with just dead blow hammer and used the bolts to even up the gap which measured .080". Put it back together with two gaskets together measuring .087" and spread thin layer of Honda Bond on both the quill and transmission casting. No leaks. Thanks everyone for your input.
 
When I was working on the transmission converting things to make My 60 4X4, I found that the lower shaft was very loose, I removed several shims till I got it right,,it always had a gear "Chuckle" when I would hit a bump, now it's gone,,I'm thinking I was hearing that lower shaft bouncing around.
 
That's interesting. I followed your 60 conversion to a 4X4. You are way out of my league. Very impressive.
 
That shaft is preloaded and if its moving back and forth then the bearings are worn out or was never set right .
 
He is working on a 2cyl. model 60 IIRC. Nothing on those is preloaded from the factory. They all have end play specs.
But I do like to set mine up tighter just for the reason you mentioned. That end play lets them start banging around and over the years really loosens things up.
