Red Kote fails

Maybe some 5 years ago I put RedKote in my tractor's gasoline tank. I followed the directions meticulously, even allowing some extra set-up/drying time. Now as I look into the tank I see the RedKote has disappeared from the bottom of the tank - from that area where gas remains after all possible has drained out to the carburetor. I always drain the tank for winter. I never, but never use fuel with alcohol. Sometimes I use Stabill (sp?) if it's going to set for an extended period of time but never Sea Foam which I understand is alcohol. Anybody else experienced this? How do I now clean out the tank and start over. Do I even want to start over with RedKote? Oh yes, I suspect it's this problem that is causing the engine to starve for fuel when under heavy load. Chunks of RedKote plugging the tank's fuel outlet.

Hi Leon,
It's been at least ten years ago since I used Red Kote to seal the tank on my 4000 Ford. I sold the tractor several years ago, but it wasn't having any problems. I still have the funnel I used to pour the Red Kote into the tank. There is a pretty good layer left, but there has been some that has worn away. I guess it's not as durable as I thought it would be.

Wonder if I could re-coat without cleaning again and without taking out the existing coat. From what I can see, the exposed steel looks really clean already. Guess I'll see if I can google up some RedKote instructions.

I've used POR for lining my tanks for years. Have never had a problem. First you use their Marine Clean to get all the junk out of the tank. Then you use their Metal Ready which prepares the metal for the sealer. Then you put in the tank sealer. Has always worked perfect for me.

me issue on a JD 4440... pulled most of the liner out the fuel line hole! It was kind of like a magician pulling the long string of handkerchiefs out of his sleeve. I did not have the tank re-lined.

I've always considered fuel tank lining a poor and perilous way to repair a fuel tank leak. I know that folks do it all the time and seem to do fine with it...but when and if it fails you potentially have a bigger problem than you started with. Best to have the tank properly repaired or replace it with a good or repairable fuel tank

From what I find using google, It's almost unavailable and health-wise, one would be better off if he didn't find it.

I used some over 20 years ago and it was white in color. It worked fantastic. I still have it in my 1962 cub cadet tank that I use weekly. All I can find locally now is Northern brand blue sealer and it is crap. I used it in a couple smaller tanks and left both sit for over 6 months in my basement to cure. The first time I put gas in them I noticed a day later the gas had started to turn blue!!

Red Kote is made by a company in Alliance Ohio called Damon Chemical. I know the guy that invented it. He is now retired but comes into the shop where I work occasionally. I don't know much about the product but I could get you a phone number if you need it.

I've repaired MANY injection pumps that had red-coat in the tanks..
Mostly Fords for some reason.?? It came loose & entered the fuel system..
That's the only experience I have w/ the product..
I'm not saying its a good or bad product, but all I see are the "end results"..
