Can I remove the quill (item 2 in the attachment) without the shaft falling out of alignment too much to re-install? I need to replace the gasket.

My model A gasket needs replaced and been wondering the same thing. I thought it would fall down and couldn't alighn it up.

You may want to remove a few of the shims too, to take up a little slack..I'm sure there is a lot...

I will probably do that. I've decided to buy the gasket from Deere rather than make my own and effectively add more shims with a thicker gasket.

Sort of hard to get a good adjustment on them when all together and just working on one side cover, but you can remove all the shims and stick it back on and CAREFULLY snug it up but do not go so tight you break off the ears. Now take feeler gauges and measure the gap best you can even it up then add enough shims/gaskets to take up that space plus the IIRC .001-.004" inch for end play. Smear a ring of silicone sealer up next to the gaskets to fill up the gap where the cap and the gaskets meet. Keep it on the body of the cap too. This will like form an o-ring and seal it all up when put back together.

That's good input Mike. I was brainstorming ways to measure the end play without getting into the transmission.

get about 2 or 3 of those small pry bars...I mean the small one and remove bolts and gently walk the housing back....put some cleaner on it and lubricant and it should move back a 1/4-1/2 " with no problem...you can then take a dremel and cut the shims in two at the top and remove...don't get in a rush ...I'd pick up a few more shims and cut them at the top left or right of hole and then ease back in till it seemed tight...don't leave a crack when bolting up or you will break the ears off...think of it this way as you're taking up some slop from wear...then when you're satisfied do the silicone as aforemention and you should have it...you could also cut your gasket or use the old one...personally I've always like the old black sealer...good luck...
