JD 24T baler parts / Good bad points of the 24Ts

Im in need of some bands for the pickup on a 24T baler. Are there any other models that are the same that will fit? Are these a decent baler? Thank you.

There were two in the neighborhood years ago and I do not recall any complaints. As with any baler that old extensive wear can make a machine a nightmare. Unless I knew it was a low acre machine I would pull it into my shop and go through it from front to back and top to bottom.

I owned 2 some years back. One had the no. 2 kicker on it, which broke often. I put a no. 30 kicker on the other which was much better shape. Very nice. I sold both when I upgraded to 336 balers. The 24t was pulled by a JD 2440 + wagon. A 336 is a heavier machine with slightly faster capacity. Also, the pickup bands had 2 styles, a flat edged type and upturned edge type which was the newer version. Upturned edge type saves alfalfa leaves better. We baled about 3000 bales a year. Good machines.

We had one for 8 or 10 years in our neighborhood ring. It pumped out an estimated 10,000 bales per year during the peak but dwindled down to 5000 bales toward the end. It was pretty much trouble free and made good bales but it did not like being fed a big bunch of hay all at once. It was very well cared for and never saw rain. Capacity-wise, it could keep two men busy stacking the rack but I have nothing else to compare it to.

24 parts are very plentiful. Check Ebay as there are lots of parts. We own two 24t balers. One has a cornstalk attachment on it that we would bale 1000-1500 bales of stalks each year for bedding when we had dairy cows. The other we bale 1500 bale of straw and a few loads of hay with. Back when I was younger we would bale 25,000 bales per year with a 24t and a 30 hyd. bale thrower. We would often bale 1000 bales a day. In my opinion the 24t is a very good baler and would work great for a smaller farm. Not the capacity of a 336 but should cost less than half the price of one as well. A 224 is not much bigger but is just more deluxe with rollers on the plunger rather than wear pads, mulitlube on the knotters and a pickup with 5 rows of teeth instead of 4. It might have a slightly faster plunger speed. Tom

I can't remember how many strokes per minute on a 224. I was thinking 224 could bale close to the same capacity as a 346 but I could be wrong.

Jim I just checked some sales brochures and the 24t and 224 have the same plunger speed 72 no load or 65 under load. The 24t weighs 2400 pounds and the 224 weighs 2888. The pickups are the same size as well with the 224 having one more bar of teeth. Tom

It would seem to me that strokes per minute would be closer to the same strokes for no load vs loaded if one had a large enough tractor pulling baler
