The famous whats it worth post. G

I have a chance to buy a 51 g, but it's partially tore down. Steering is taken apart, head is off and cracked which is the reason it sits like it is. Very good sheet metal, rims, and tires. Has a set of wheel weights and power troll. We're playing the what will you give me what do you want for it game. I don't think we want to offend each other. I know values of these older tractors seem to be down. So the big question. What's it worth?

The supply of uncracked G heads is low so have you found or priced a good one. If you are friends an know the previous running condition was good on everything else $2500 is plenty.

I don't have a strong feel for the G market but probably a thousand would be plenty. I don't think the market it is rising anymore for them. Now if this were 25 years ago and we only had the word of our coffee shop buddies versus the internet to find one then you could probably figure on paying 2,000 for it. Just my opinion.

Hopefully, the friend would be mechanically inclined to know that it had good oil pressure to offer 2,000-2,500. Yes, a lot of guys are and take care of that before the new paint goes on but I have seen a number of guys that as long as it does not leak and does not make strange noises throw the paint on and not be concerned about things such as oil pressure. After all, its only running 50 feet to get on the trailer and maybe 200 from the trailer to its spot at the show. No way to know about oil pressure in the tractor's present condition.

Usually not an issue with the old 2 cyl's. Pressure is still adjustable if needed, just take the starter and top cover off to adjust.

Understood. At the same time if I were in the market it would help my confidence in writing a 2,000 dollar check if I saw the needle go to the high side of the oil pressure gauge while the tractor was running. We just don't know the life the tractor had prior to the OP asking about it this morning. Did the current owner take the tractor to a plow day to find it needed a replacement head or did the guy before him tell the current owner "it needs a head" w/o much explanation.
