Starting to restore JD D 1943 model.

Just bought a 1943 JD D that was driven in a barn 10 + years ago, drained gas tank and radiator. He started doing a few things to it but had family health problems and just let it sit. Not stuck! What all should I do and check before I try to start it.
It has a pto and looks as if it was used to run something with the pto and also the front axel is off set to the belt side of the tractor As if they used the belt some also. Will never know really what it was used for I guess. The hammer strap looks like it never had a pin in it. Not worn at all . Engine turn freely with some compression. I did put some oil in the spark plug hole to lubricate the rings. Has a Wico xh477 mag that is firing some but may not be enough to crank. Is there a market for that pto? I may take it off. Just thinking about that for now. All suggestions are welcome.

I'd keep the PTO myself. I guess you could probably get a couple hundred bucks for it but you'd have to find the right person to get it. I think it'd be useful and fun with a dyno.

Your approach to starting it seems good, I might try pull starting it first as long as you're SURE the clutch works properly. Give it fresh gas and oil, be prepared to pull plug wires if it doesn't have oil pressure or something stupid.

Long live the Ds!
