HELP!!! 4020 Clutch issues

So here is my issue I had a button clutch and while my tractor was split I thought I would change it out for a standard clutch disk. I had the JD dealer adjust the clutch, took the whole thing home and installed it. Put the tractor back together and noticed that that clutch pedal was in the same position as before I took everything apart on the bottom of the adjustment slot. But I started the tractor and it would not shift into any gears, shut off the tractor and put it in gear and started it and with the clutch pedal pushed in it took off. Had a friend look and thought maybe the fingers needed to be closer so we adjusted them and moved them so that the bolt was at the top of the adjustment slot. Started the tractor again same result. the PTO engages and disengages fine, you can see the springs move when pushing in the clutch. Wondering do I need to put my button disk back in? Any ideas Please help

thank you

Did you install the lined plate wrong side to the flywheel, or possibly mangle it by getting rough drawing the two halves of the tractor together without the pilot shaft and clutch hub splines being in alignment?

I ASSUME you had the flywheel and clutch pressure plate parts resurfaced, and had the dealership shop reset the fingers while the clutch was fully assembled, bolted the flywheel???

I was thinking on new clutch that adjustment bolt on clutch pedal should at bottom of slot not top of slot.

Ditto on what Bob asked if clutch plate was installed backwards[/url]

on a new clutch why wouldn't the adjustment bolt be at the top? wouldn't that allow for things to be adjusted when they wore?

Yes the dealership had the flywheel and clutch pack when they adjusted everything. I really didn't think the clutch disk was backwards, but I am going to have to split it again anyways so I can check it out. Can it be anything else?

As clutch lining wears fingers on pressure plate move farther from face of flywheel therefore getting closer to throwout brg. So to get correct clearance between fingers & TO brg one needs to move lever(key 6) farther back away from flywheel IE towards top of slot. If bolt is already at the "top of slot" then there's no adjustment as clutch lining wears.

So sounds like I messed that up. Is there a way to readjust it once I pull it back out with out the tool? Or do I just need to get one?

Is there a pattern any where where I can make one? Or would I just need to order one and wait on shipping?

I found the dimensions of tool on Google.

So the clutch disk has 2 sides a flat side and a side that sticks out a little bit on the shaft. now the flat side goes towards the transmission and the side that sticks out goes towards the engine correct?

$72 plus freight for a JD 4010/20/5010/20 clutch adjusting tool can be bought right here from Yesterdays Tractors.

I should get one myself because I'm using one I laboriously cut from aluminum from an A&I paper template that was included with a clutch kit.

In the past...I have had new clutch discs that had the hubs riveted to the disc wrong and interfered with the flywheel bolts....

Earlier this summer I installed a new clutch/pressure plate assembly in a 4020 that would not/could not be adjusted properly! Flopped the old plate and pressure plate onto the flywheel and it couldn't be properly adjusted either!! At some point in time some machine shop had done a poor job machining the flywheel surfaces. I could find no specs for plate surface to pressure plate surface dimensions and the machine shop I use stated they just machine equal amounts off both surfaces to maintain status-quo.

Opted for an aftermarket flywheel($400) and it adjusted fine...

I am hoping I don't have to go that far. the clutch disk was installed correctly. I am having a different JD mechanic look at it to see if he can figure out what is wrong with it before I put it back together,
