Hydraulic/transmission filter JD 2040

A hydraulic line ruptured while I was moving hay, so I decided to change transmission oil and filter after I repaired the line. I lost most of the oil onto the ground, and onto me, anyway. The filter housing has given me all kinds of trouble to reassemble. The new filter came with two new square-shoulder seals which seem to be the same size as the one I took out of the tractor. But all three are a very loose fit on the canister cover shoulders when I lay them in place. Each one has a sixteenth of an inch slack when I set it in place. That might still work if the cover was not milled to an interference fit in the housing. I think I'll try to find an oil-resistant o-ring that will fit in the groove provided. Has anybody else had this problem?

Is your replacement filter OEM or aftermarket? Correct quad ring spec's are listed below.

The packing is a little large so it will stay up in the trans housing and not fall out while you are installing the filter cover. a little grease helps sometimes. The cover should be a slip fit in the housing. Rotate it slowly as you draw up the bolt to prevent it from tightening crooked and cutting the packing. I have seen the aluminum covers corroded so they are tight.

Thanks for the replies. Jim, it is a cross match aftermarket filter, but I believe it matches that description. The seal I took out is the same size as the new ones,
but when I try to fit them into the space for a seal, none of them will seat. Cliff, this cap has the return line for the FEL cast into it, but it is cast iron and
heavy. I'll try again tomorrow. Maybe everything will fit better.

I guess I still didn't get it lined up right. I refilled the reservoir, and there were some drips around the filter canister. When I started, the tractor, though, I lost most of the fluid onto the floor. I give up. This shouldn't be such a challenge to get right. I will say Cliff, that your tip about using grease to hold the packing did help me keep the seal in place.

Yes. Both mating surfaces were clean, but the packing seemed to be oversized. Anyway, I called a mobile mechanic that lives ten miles away. He had it in place in ten
minutes. I wish I had called him sooner.

I had trouble with my 2550 until an old guy at the dealership told me how to do it right. Don't put the seal on the filter cover. Put it up into the opening on the tractor. Then slowly thread the cover onto the bolt and draw it up into the tractor. Will seal every time.
