Great Bend 440 belt replacement

I took over operation and maintenance on my Dad's John Deere Great Bend 440. He was using a battery charger to start it every time and I noticed a belt was off a pulley. I attempted to get the old frazzled one back on with my back on the ground, reaching up and testing the situation and finished by cutting it off. What is the correct procedure to put a new belt on what I am assuming is a generator belt. Thanks, JMK

Not sure because Great Bend 440 is not the tractor model number that might have helped better if we had that instead.

Great Bend is a defunct aftermarket company that used to be located in Great Bend Kansas which in no way is associated with John Deere. Bushog dot com has purchased their inventory, rights, and will distribute manuals for all things bearing the name of Great Bend. I find email with Bushog works quite well and one can expect a return email with manuals requested as an attachment in short order.

As to putting on a generator or alternator belt, it's pretty much the same deal as general automotive work. You loosen the sliding adjustment bolt and then the base bolt and slide the generator or alternator in towards the engine. It's likely that you'll have to feed the belt over the front of the cooling fan one blade at a time. And if you have a coupling from the crankshaft to the front hydraulic pump then that coupling needs to be split in two and taken out so the belt can go on the crankshaft drive pulley. From there it's standard stuff. And I find it better to stand on my feet, so also wondering about that lying on your back comment, you must have some very long arms!! Is the loader frame in the way coming in from the sides? Otherwise just looking from the sides should reveal very quickly your generator or alternator and it's missing or otherwise belt.

Model number for tractor should be found on the hood some 2 or three feet forward of the cab if it has one. Four numbers, something like 4050, 4630, 4640.

I am looking at a picture I took with my phone and it says John Deere, made in Germany, type 3140, code 314BT, and the serial number 467045. Standing, I could reach in with only one hand to the belt. Lying down, I could use two hands and reach the bottom pulley. Thanks for the reply, JMK

You're welcome. I can see with the loader frame right in the way why you could only get one hand in there. It's still tight without the loader. And now we can see the logic of going thru so much hassle to avoid doing the 'right' thing and putting a belt back on it.

Use this link,
<a href="http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt" target="_blank">Parts Applet</a>

Enter 3140, Find and select your tractor. Tending to think it would be 4186 - 3040, 3140 Tractors entry where (S.N. 430000- ) means from that serial number on up. Go to Sectional Index and select 41-Electrical System to find out that there are many choices of alternators for that one. If it doesn't work you'll need to do some sleuthing on the alternator for it's number, where it's regulator is at and match that with the choices in the Parts Applet. Depending on what number these get subbed to there might only be one or two to actually pick from today too. But this is just a potential headache for a future day anyway.

What I see as a serious issue at the moment is hanging the front loader in the nearest stout tree and also dropping the loader frame. And after doing that much work just to get at it a bit easier I would certainly buy all new belts. You might even consider a brand new alternator just to eliminate the chance of the old one dying 2 days after you get it all back together.

(quoted from post at 22:48:01 08/23/17) I suggest to remove the hood and work from top and bottom.

I will definitely look at this option. Would matching up a belt say at Tractor Supply with the old belt be a viable solution or do I need to find a specific replacement.

Thanks, I found the different alternators as you described. Hopefully, I can replace the belts without taking off the front end loader and see if my starting issue goes away.

Nothing critical in these belts, so matching to size is fine. Working down from the removed hood is fine too - anything to make it easier. If alternator issue gets pricey on you remember you can get a rebuilt Delco 10-SI from the auto parts store for 75 including core charge, this would be the three wire version, it allows to use the idiot light in the dash. Many sites out there now telling how to wire them up. But the basics are idiot light wire to terminal #1, terminal #2 to battery lug of alternator, and heavy charging wire to battery lug on alternator.
