Shutting off JD H tractor

Besides shutting the fuel off, what is the best way to shut off a 1940 John Deere H tractor? I've often just shorted the magneto to shut it off. Does that damage the magneto?
Thank you.

I always set at a high idle and shut off the gas and walk away. One day, my wife said "It takes 53 seconds for your tractor to quit after you walk away". I started checking it and she was right.

Shutting off the mag doesn't damage it HOWEVER I prefer to turn the gas off and let it eventually die from lack of fuel...

Longer term shut downs I shut off the fuel. But for short term and emergency stops and starts I added a shut off button to the mag.

IIRC I got the factory Wico post kit and installed it. I have done this to a few of my older models with XH Mags on them. Some the mags have the post and others you have to drill the case in install these parts. Once you get the post installed which is a threaded stud I then put one of the spring steel with insulated button type shut offs on them.

If you are going to use kerosene or the like when running it, it must be shut off by shutting off the fuel. That leaves the carburetor empty to receive the gasoline for start and warm up. If there is tractor oil in the carb, it will be hard to start when cold.

That's the best way to do all-fuel but you don't have to do it that way. You can drain the carb. and refill bowl with gas before you try and start it. BTDT.
I actually store all my tractors with kerosene left in the carbs. Even the gas only models. WAY BETTER on them when sitting for long times than dry.
