Shipping ignorant

How does one go about shipping something heavy and awkward, like a G cylinder head & crankshaft, the cheapest way? Somehow cardboard and bubble wrap doesn't seem adequate. Where can I get a box for stuff
like that? (I SAID I was ignorant, didn't I?). Please eddicate me on this. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I have had good luck using Fastenal 3PL for shipping larger/heavier items. Have used them a couple times for hit & miss engines.

I worked at several companies that made/sold/shipped heavy but fragile MachiNed iron or steel parts. A well built wooden crate attached to its own skid is the best way to ship. Make sure the sides & top are well constructed, no knots, well nailed and braced, and spiked into the skid/pallet.

One company we made/shipped scrap metal cutting shear blades. Solid chunks of precision machined cast alloy steel heat-treated to 55-60 Rockwell C. Corners so square and sharp you run a finger along the edge and you better be hurrying to the emergency room for stitches, they cut to the bone! I bought special wire bound wooden boxes plus we wrapped them several times with 3/4 inch high tensile steel banding strap each way around them and strapped them to the skid.

Go to Fastenal 3PL on your computer and get a rate quote. You will need to know weight and size and it will have to be palletized and it will go to your nearest Fastenal store and will be shipped to the nearest store to your destination.I have shipped up to 1200#s and no problems. You can pay up front or have buyer pay on their end but need address and PH#.Good to work with and they will make sure it is properly wrapped. Not as fast but will get there in a couple weeks at the longest and Have had things get lost but they always find them.If you have questions call local Fastenal store.
helpfull.

I always made a crate with 2x2's and plywood...securing the item inside with heavy belting or wire....swore off shipping blocks or heavy pieces as all the buyer has to say is it was damaged and you're stuck with a return problem....unless you can sell as is and buyer takes all the risk....
