What is the best procedure for setting the crankshaft end play on a late styled (1948) model A tractor? I know it is supposed to be .005 to
.010 inch clearance, but not the best way to get an accurate setting. Thanks for any help.

A dial indicator on a magnetic base works good for that. a cheap import is good enough a high priced one is not needed for this.
Be sure to check it in a couple of spots. Sometimes you get one that is tight in a spot and loose in another spot. Too tight is worse than too loose. If tight they can bind up.

Well, we ended up having to get a new taper-lock flywheel because the original busted when we were torquing up the new grade 8 bolts we got. The crank splines o.d. had about 7 thousands taper and the flywheel had come loose once way back when and was replaced 10 years ago by the one we broke. Engine always had a little knock we could never really figure where it came from. We've got about .006- to .007 inch endplay now after the lengthy job of mounting this new flywheel. Engine still has some knock at idle and lower speeds which feels like endplay at the pulley side, but sounds okay wound up. It's a powerful one, has some Josh Blackburn modifications....but not strokeded or anything too radical. We'll run it some and keep retorquing that taper-lock if needed. Thanks for the help.
