4020 throw out bearing

Question, I have split my 4020 apart, to replace the ring gear on the fly wheel, and to fix the jumping that will occur periodically when letting out the clutch. Now the engine rear seal is perfect, in fact you can still see the yellow john deere primer. on the transmission side of the tractor that housing is covered in a thick layer of grease, I know that I have not greased the bearing that many times since I have owned the tractor. I did grease it while I have it split and noticed the grease coming out of the bearing. SO my thoughts are to replace the bearing. So would I replace anything else while I am in there, and what would cause the jumping while letting out on the clutch, after the clutch is fully engaged it is just fine and the jumping doesn't happen every time? Thank you in advance

It sounds like you may have a "Button" clutch plate in it,, these are very bad about being jumpy,,and it is also possible that the clutch fingers are out of adjustment, 1 being behind the other will make them jumpy too,, you can check this by looking up through the bottom cover.

Since I have the clutch out how can I check to see if it is a "button" clutch? also is there a way to properly adjust the fingers with it out?

with the amount of grease on the rear housing would any other seals need replaced? or is this normal?

Was the old plate Feramic ( Don't use the feramic disk as they eat up flywheels and pressure plates ),or fiber ? Fiber disks don't usually jump . check the pressure plate and flywheel surface for warping . I don't remember the speck off hand , but a warped plate isn't good . The feramic is an industrial plate and cause hard shifting and are jumpy as they don't slip . NOw having said that they are fine for loader work , but try to back up a wagon ?

Typical T.O. bearings aren't sealed and will quickly throw excess grease. That being said, I wouldn't consider doing a clutch job without replacing them. (Two, ASSUMING it has a PTO.)

Fingers are adjusted using a JDE61 tool. Reproductions can be had for $30 and up on ebay and some tractor parts place. This place mite even sell 'em???)

If i get a new clutch disk, do I need to get the rest of the clutch? or just resurface the 2 surfaces and get some shims?

Talked to a machine shop and they will not resurface the clutch side with out rebuilding it. Not sure it needs to be rebuilt, and on my farm it has a nice life of luxury, the heaviest thing it pulls is a 10 bush hog. the flywheel and the clutch plate are both very smooth currently no grooves, will not catch a finger nail. So would I be ok to just put in a new standard clutch disk readjust the clutch and put it all back together?

Yes you will be fine.
And it does not matter. you can split a 4020 after breakfeat, be on time for lunch and go plow in the afternoon.
