John Deere H timing gear noise

I have a beautiful little model H. I have about 25 hours on a rebuilt engine. The problem I'm having is the timing gears are worn pretty bad. It makes a horrible noise when driving around. I have turned the camshaft bearing housing which appears to be eccentric. I have replaced the camshaft bearing on the left side. The crankshaft gear teeth are worn for sure. It has some decent size burrs at the top of the teeth. What is my solution if any? Are a lot of these tractors loud also?.

I just rebuilt a complete H and set every gear perfect. I had never heard an H before i started it and once it ran I was told that that's what they sound like. I don't think with the way they are built that they will sound like any other 2 cylinder. That being said there is not much fix for worn gears and its not just one gear that's worn.

I too would guess, sight unseen, sound unheard, that the noise in mostly in the set of bevel gears that drive the fan - or maybe the bearings in that gear box. Some mechanics seem to forget that the fan/governor drive box is part of the engine when they overhaul the engine. I bought an H once with "overhauled" engine. The subject gear box was noisy. I found all the bearings in the box were shot. At that time a set of the fan drive bevel gears was still available from Deere for something over $700. I went back with all new bearings and replaced the worst of the two bevel gears with a used one. (Not a recommended practice.) As expected the gears are noisy, but I know that in spite of some noise, the box will keep running without seizing up with bad bearings. Good luck. BTW, it's next to impossible to get that gear box and fan drive shaft out of or especially back in the tractor without taking the hood off - a nasty job.

Join the club ! Have tried two new sets of fan/gov gears (one JD the other aftermarket), replaced ALL bearing in fan/gov..... and still has noise. It's deffinitly coming from those gears cuz when I run it w/o the fan shaft in it's quiet... Also was told this is a typical characteristic of an H but hard to believe they would have left the factory like that. All you can try doing is shimming the fan shaft (with gaskets) to increase/decrease the gear mesh but don't get them meshed too tight whatever you do or you'll chip the gear teeth. Still not sure what I'm going to do. This noise really takes away from the JD 2 cyl sound big time ! Good luck...
