3020 starter issue

1970 gas 3020. Has started fine in the past. Recently a problem in that periodically does nothing when key is turned. Can then short across starter lugs with a screw driver until it cranks a little then get on, turn the key and it starts. Diagnosis?

Thanks.

Old and worn out ignition switch and/or safety interlock switch often can't carry enough juice to close the solenoid on the starter. And often a fix for that is to mount an old school Ford automotive type starter solenoid that will close with that lower amperage to then energize the starter's solenoid with the proper authority. Basically exactly what you are doing with the screwdriver.

Worn nuetrul safety switch, and/or tension on the switch needs adjusted by drawing the upper shift lever "out" a bit.

I been chasing that exact problem for two years in my 1967 3020 gas. Just sometimes the dash lights just dim a bit & the solenoid just doesn't quite pull in. I been through both of the wiring harness plugs & their connectors, the main switch, I shorted out the Neutral safety switch but have not yet found it.

For last few months he's been well behaved & has not failed. Sure is aggravating when it won't work! I've wondered if maybe someone put the wrong solenoid on it?

Each piece seems to measure & test just fine. I swear it has eyes & soon as it sees me coming at it with the DVM to find where the voltage changes markedly it decides it's time to start!

I REALLY wish I had the answer for you. One day it will solidly quit & then I'll find it! I'll post what I find when THAT day gets here!

In the mean time good luck & be durned careful with that screwdriver!
