Re-assemble starter for 1950 A

All: I am getting back to the starter for my 1950 A. Have taken it apart and straightened out and cleaned up the post coming out of starter to engage switch and cleaned up the switch. Now I need to put the starter together (I have not done this part before).

There are four brushes that surround the the small end of the armature, located inside the case where there are slots (in the case) covered by a tough paper and a steel band. How do I get those all compressed back enough to slide the armature between them?

Sorry to have hit a blank spot in my process, but hope to get an education here. (I can take the starter to a local repair shop and probably get this done but would like to know how to do it myself.)

Thanks!

IIRC that is the one where you take a coat hanger wire and make a little hook. Then you can hook the brush spring and lift them up and if you shove the brush up enough it will catch the side of the brush and wedge it in the up position. I think this can be done with the end cap (brush holder) off. Then you install the armature and end cap, then go back and lift the springs thru the little openings and poke the brush down where it belongs with the spring on top of the end of it. Make sure the brush wires don't touch ground or are out of the way of the bolts that hold it all together too.

I usually just position the housing/brush holder so the brushes are against the commutator. Then use a screwdriver or eraser end of a pencil or whatever to push one brush into its holder far enough to clear the commutator then let that one just barely get a bite on the commutator by tilting the cap. Then push another brush back & tilt that way, then another then finally the last one & it will with all 4 brushes slide down into place. Takes a bit of care I diligence but it works. Loose yer grip just a little & you'll start over. :)

Oughta try one off an early styled long hood A, they had 6 brushes! I assume D'd & G's were the same but I've never monkeyed with one.

Good luck.

Thanks!!! That is worth a try! A friend of mine (Mark Rice from NC) sent this to me:

On the starter, my magic way is to take off the metal clamp (and paper gasket) and use thread or thin wire to pull and hold the brushes back as you insert the armature. Then cut the thread and pull it out.

Now I have some things to try!!!

Thanks again! LEN

OK! Thanks for all of the help. I tried the suggestion that my friend sent me.. cut 4 4"x3/8" dowels and stout but thin cotton cord. Wrapped thread around each brush and tied around dowel outside each slot. Turned dowels against case to wind the cord and draw the brushes up into holder. Armature slid in easily! Back together. Connected to my 12v hot box (+ ground), lifted lever on switch and it spins like a top!

Now the heavy work..getting it BACK into tractor!!!!

Thanks again!

Way I do it is wedge the brush into the brush holder by pushing the top of brush 1st into the holder wedging it in place, slide the plate over the commutator and pushing the brushes against the commutator.
